How a Fear of Failure is Damaging to Creativity

Share

The brainstorming process is really an amazing thing. We sit down, spend some time racking our brains to come up with a truly unique and exciting idea, and when we finally find it…we get afraid.

Surely you’ve had this experience before—you come across an idea so bold and creative that the prospect of actually having it come to fruition frightens you. And you’re not frightened so much by the idea itself, but the prospect of failure as you attempt to turn that idea into a reality.

In this way, fear of failure is one of the most damaging and imposing roadblocks to creativity. That fear can basically paralyze our minds and our creative process to the extent where we’re stuck in a limbo situation where we have this great new idea but are too afraid to implement it. shutterstock_204778351 (800x789)

What we need to remember is that fear and failure are two of the greatest driving forces behind the creative process. Without fear and without failure, there is no creativity and no hope of success.

In fact, it’s been repeated so much over the years that it’s almost become a cliché, but it’s truefailure is perhaps the most powerful means to propel ourselves to excellence. It’s a learning process. We fail at one thing, learn from it, and move on to try something new. Through this method we are able to find the most error-proof means of achieving success in our undertakings. To fail is to come one step closer to success. So if we are afraid of failure, we are afraid of success as well.

The best way to overcome this fear of failure is to place no limits on your creativity.

Ideas like “we’ve always done it this way” or “that would never work” should have no business in your offices. Once you start placing yourself in a box, you’ve put very defined and strict constraints on the level of success you could achieve.
