One of the most common ways that business owners lose their passion for their work is by getting sucked into a variety of bad habits that really inhibit the types of success they can achieve. You might not even realize that you have these habits, because the process of making them habitual is very slow and gradual. But the fact is that many businesses that aren't achieving their full potential are likely being slowed down by at least one or two bad habits.
What those bad habits are varies from company to company. Common examples include poor money management, taking breaks from blogging or marketing, using only one marketing channel and more. But regardless of the habit that you have formed as a business, there is one consistent set of steps you can take to break that habit.
Here are four steps that should help you to break any bad habit you've settled into as a business:
- Start small. Don't expect to be able to turn things around overnight. Write down what the first steps to breaking the habit are, and set a goal to turn it around over a certain period of time.
- Commit yourself. You need to take responsibility for breaking this habit, and promise yourself that you'll do whatever it takes to get it broken. Figure out creative ways that you can establish positive reinforcement as you achieve your goals, and punish yourself if you miss your goals. By holding yourself accountable and committing yourself to breaking the habit, you are much more likely to find success.
- Identify alternatives. Perhaps you have slipped into a bad habit for a particular reason. Maybe it was a quick, easy fix to a problem. A good way to break the habit is to find an alternative solution to that problem that is more constructive for your business.
- Get help. In some cases, people are unable to break bad habits by themselves. This is completely understandable! Get whatever help you need, whether it's from a colleague, employee, friend or loved one. Tell them the goals that you have and the habit you're trying to break, and encourage them to hold you accountable.
